So what's this all about?
Recently I've been paying a lot more attention to the food around us and more importantly the food that we all consume and how it effects our health and well-being (after all "You are what you eat")
For many years i would say I've had a pretty average diet with a mix of pizzas, pastas, meats and maybe a few to little fruit/vegetables but overall i thought it wasn't so bad (well apart from all the sweet treats) but the other day i watched a very inspiring documentary called Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. Watch for free here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mS0YA465ts
This documentary wasn't just views and opinions about what is good for us but just an average guy who was feeling ill and taking a lot of medication and deciding to do something about it, his approach was more extreme than most...two months with nothing but juiced fruit and vegetables, his journey was filmed each step of the way, he was monitored by health professionals and after the two months he looked like a different guy, he was off his medication, his friends/family noticed a change in his personality and he even changed the life of a very ill truck driver in the USA who also documented his trip.
But why juice?
That's a good question. Well juicing allows you to consume many more micro-nutrients in a single sitting than you would be able to eat, think of it like a super concentrated dose of "good stuff" that gives your stomach a break from digesting. You know when you've had a large meal and you just want to sleep? That's because your body's digestive system takes a lot of energy so giving it a break allows this energy to be used for repairing your body.
Is it good not to eat?
Humans have been evolving for a long time and most of this time we were simply hunters and gatherers, eating on the move, with the season and when we could (no this was not 3 times a day with snacks in the middle) Us clever monkeys would often go days without eating and our bodies are still designed to work this way. Many studies show that fasting is extremely beneficial to our bodies and in fact giving your digestive system a break lets your body heal you from the inside. Many people report feeling pains in parts of the body where they have had injuries and studies have shown that these areas are being healed to a much greater lever during this period.
And what exactly are you going to do then?
I plan on only having juiced vegetables (with the occasional fruit) for seven days, yep thats seven days with no solid foods. I will start on Monday 10th Feb and finish up on the 16th (allowed to then eat on the morning of the 17th) this mini journey will be documented on this blog, not only to hopefully get you readers thinking about what you consume more but also to help me along the way, its much more motivational when you write things down, especially if you know other people are reading it.
I will purchase my fruit and veg from local suppliers and opt for organic as much as possible and will also have a BMI scan 3 times, im unsure if anything will even be picked up on such a short change in diet but will throw this in to add an element of science.
So stayed tuned for the start of my Juicing Experiment and hopefully it will be a positive 7 days ahead of me!!!
